do get xp back

How do I get XP back?

When I try to load my computer as Windows XP it just shows a black screen, like the monitors on but the computer isn't, but it loads fine when I select Vista and I can't use vista because every 10 minutes I get the blue screen of death... Can someone help me?

- Do you install by running setup from the DVD in windows, or did you boot from the cd? - When it asked you if you wanted to upgrade or do a clean install, which did you do? - Did it ask you where you wanted to install windows to, and if so, what did you click?

Um idk Upgrade... i dont think it did

Hello
If you Upgraded then you cannot get Windows XP back. The only way is for you to format the computer and re-install Windows XP

It sounds like you upgraded from Windows XP to Windows Vista.
Unfortunately, this is a non-reversable process.
The only way to get XP back is to re-install it. You should have received a system restore disk that came with your computer when you bought it.
You will need to first back up any data that you want to keep (Documents, music, etc) to a CD, or another hard drive.
Once you're done, put the restore CD in your DVD-ROM drive, then restart your computer.
When your computer says "Boot from cd" or something similar, push any key on your keyboard. This will load the restore CD.
Restoring your computer to Windows XP using the restore disk WILL DELETE EVERYTHING ON YOUR COMPUTER and bring it back to the way it was when you first got the computer.

It never came with a disk to restore it... but my cousin has a windows xp and I think his came with the disk, would I be able to use his disk? And I was actually thinking of doing that because I have nothing on my hard drive that I use besides my browser and media player and I can easily redownload those. but would I be able to use his disk if he still has it?

Your computer should have came with either a restore disk or a Windows XP disk. If it did not, you should be able to get a copy from your computer manufactuerer ...
A restore disk from another computer will not work.
Even if your friend had a regular XP CD it probably wouldn't work. There should be a sticker on your computer with a CD-KEY on it ... that is most likely an OEM CD KEY ... you will need an OEM version of Windows XP in order for it to accept that key. Just a regular Windows XP disk won't work with it.
The easiest way to go about this is to get the correct CD from your computer manufacturer, if your computer did not come with one.

What is the brand and model of your computer?

I have the same problem and I did not upgrade and installed at the same partition that XP was on.

Theoretically, it may be possible to bring back XP, if you have not deleted the Windows.old directory. However, it is pretty involved in order to do it successfully.
Someone else had the same problem at a different forum, and I think they were successful.

Some Manufacturers restore CD will not load partitioning software after using Vista-my Sony XP Home will not work to restore after using Vista-I have to use another clean non-vista hd to format my Sony computer using XP to reformat the partition before getting Sony XP Home Restore to run-many people will have this problem after using the beta. Even people who know what they are doing will get problems-I have been running dual boots with Vista since 5308 and 5384 ate my XP bootfiles during install-it happens with BETAS-people who do not know how to repair these problems should NEVER use a beta.

Some computers, especially laptops, don't come with restore disks, they have restore partitions on the hard drive. See if you have a small partition on your hard drive, maybe 1 or 2 Gigs. Then go to the manufacturers site, and get the directions for restoring.

Windows.old is a hidden folder on the drive you installed windows to.
To
see it, you will need to display hidden files.
In explorer, click Organize -> Folder Options -> View Tab:
Click Show hidden files and folders Uncheck Hide protected operating system files

I dont see it.....

Oh, sorry, you're not Frederik ... I thought you were in my previous message :)
Since you upgraded from XP to Vista, there is no Windows.old ... you have no way of going back.
Since Frederik did not upgrade, and did a clean install, there is a slight chance he could get his old XP back.

Shawn, if you don't know where and what windows.old is, you should just reinstall XP from scratch.

Yeah... they should have used the long hours of downloading B2 to read slowly and carefully the warnings on Microsoft's Vista Beta 2 homepage;-)

Especially since it was the last text they saw before requesting the download. Kinda like the last thing a dying man sees....
